When i first read about this, i was outraged! I thought that we had taken one of our own citizens and just decided to execute them without reason, without a trial, without a chance of self-defense. But when i read the original article (linked above), there were some things that caught my eye. First was the link to a previous story, giving a bit more history about al-Aulaqi and why he was put on the — second thing that caught my eye — capture-or-kill list. The operative words are CAPTURE or KILL. This means that he’s not being executed or assassinated, he’s a wanted man. I make the connection between this and the posters from the Old West, “WANTED: Dead or Alive”.

I can see how people might be upset that we’re going after one of our own citizens, but if that citizen has blatantly turned his back on our country and everything it stands for (good and bad), and is openly trying to harm it. I don’t see why we have to extend a hand and say, “Come back, we’ll give you a trial in our extremely flawed and overly complicated legal system”. We will either capture you and treat you as an enemy of the state, or if it comes down to it, we won’t hesitate to kill you. This doesn’t mean though that we’re just going to shoot you when we see you.

If this guy is actually a cleric, and not really a terrorist like the mounds of evidence seem to show, then he should turn himself over.

While I might still be a youngster when it comes to working in the corporate world or knowing how management and employees are supposed to interact, I still think common sense should apply. An employee is expected to perform certain tasks for pay. When asked to take on extra responsibilities the employee is within his or her rights to ask for more pay. If more pay is agreed upon, the employer is then ethically obligated to fulfill their end of the bargain. Not doing so does more than just upset the employee, it sows the seeds of mistrust and resentment.

Having an employer that follows through with what they promise typically has happier employees who would do more for the company than one where the employer constantly breaks promises.

Employees who work for a company who doesn’t value them, or treat them with respect and dignity also won’t recommend the company to others. If everyone knows that a certain business has shady practices and often abuses it’s privileges, soon that company won’t have any customers or referrals from employees.

It just makes sense to me if management makes promises to an employee, such as a raise. They should keep that promise, especially if that employee has taken on the extra responsibilities for which the raise was promised.

Lying to employees only breeds disgruntled employees. And we all know that’s not a healthy work environment.

As a note for anyone concerned, this has nothing to do with my current employer. Where I work people are treated with respect and decency. I wish every place could be this awesome.

I guess i’ve been thinking about that a lot. While at work I get bombarded with FOX News all day long, constantly spinning their web of blah blah blah.

Ok, i get it. People will have different opinions about this, about that. But most of the time the opinions being conveyed are very narrowly focused and don’t take into account any other situations or topics that have an impact of the topic being opinioned over.

Lets take this talk about taxes. One side is saying, “To help fix the economy, let’s tax the rich!”. The other side is saying, “How is taxing people going to fix the economy? You have to lower taxes!” Each side has proper points. Each side has their view of the world and to them their statement is the only way. But in reality what probably should be done is take a bit of each side and find a solution that will work for more people than just one side of the divide.

The issues with taxes. Democrats want to help bail out every industry that seems to be getting into trouble. I get it, help the struggling industries get back on their feet, and the economy will fix itself since they get to keep people employed. Republicans on the other hand want to have taxes lowered so citizens have more money in their pocket, and as such have more money to spend on things which will in turn fix the economy.

Both are valid ways of looking at things, but which one will work quicker, and which one will be more effective?

It’s a tough topic, because this one issue ties into so many other things.

Let’s say that the government bails out some of the struggling industries (auto, banking, etc etc) and now the country is in debt passed it’s eyeballs. So the country now needs to increase it’s income. The easy way to do this is to raise taxes. Simple, everyone just chips in a little more of their hard earned cash. The problem here is that people have less money in their pocket and now the economy slows down since less money is being passed through consumer purchases. Another solution? How about cutting back on imports?

Currently the US is importing much more than what it’s exporting. Another problem now though is what does the US have that others would want to buy? Personally I have no idea. Take the (and all of this is my opinion, none of it is hard fact) auto industry, the quality of American cars isn’t as good as imported brands like Toyota, Audi, BMW, etc. While we in the US buy American cars, most other advanced countries, especially those in Europe and Asia don’t buy American cars. What about electronics then? I don’t think I really have to say anything about that, when was the last time you saw an American-made HDTV or DVD Player or Computer? Everything comes from Asia.

So what does the US sell? Without having to go into actual research a few things pop into my head. Entertainment (music and movies) and textiles (ie: cotton). That’s about all i can think of.. Basically, if we’re going to fix our economy we need to bring money in from outside our country, export our stuff, import monies. Once that’s done the economy can truely recover.

And then on top of that there’s the spending on other things that the government does, and while we all hate the financial bean counters, i think they’re a necessary evil. Especially when you give money to areas that don’t have good enough sense to spend the money wisely (ie: Military spending, I’ve seen plenty of Plasma screens and software bought just because someone had left over money at the end of the year and was about to lose it). But that’s a rant for another time.

Anyway. The big topic is that to fix any issue you have to take a look at how and where that issue connects with other issues and problems. Then find a fix that doesn’t cause those other issues to worsen. It’s hard, but it’s the only way to permanently fix anything. Do it right the first time and you don’t have to go back and do it again. ..or.. Do such a horrible job the first time that we throw a coup-de-tat and install a new government. It wouldn’t be the first time something like that has happened.

Enough ranting for now, i’ve got to get some work done.

It’s almost 8pm, and i’m still at work. It also looks like I’ll be here for a bit longer. So, i’m pulling a 12hr+ shift today. Don’t worry though, I’m only getting paid for 10. Good ol’ corporate America at work. On the plus side though, I do get to come in late tomorrow. They said noon, so that means I’m getting the good side of the deal there (unless I’m really here till 10pm, by which time I’d probably have committed suicide).

Stupid things happened last week. The network security team has a habit of randomly rebooting machines remotely; to apply patches and whatnot. What sucks is that we can’t run any of our scheduled tasks unless someone is logged in. And if the machine reboots while no one is there.. you guessed it there’s no one there to log in, and hense, none of our scheduled tasks run. So, everything was running behind last week, which ran into the weekend. I’d been off since Friday, so I didn’t know that the updates on Friday had been pushed back until Saturday, but no one pushed the Saturday tasks back. So, like i stated earlier, shit broke.

So I’m running all the scripts manually now. Which takes forever, I’ve been at it for 3 hours already, and i’m not even halfway done. If I’m not at a point where I can let it run on it’s own by 8:30 – 9:00, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I kind of want to smack Brad in the head. He’s the one that came in on Saturday to check that everything ran properly. Evidently, that didn’t happen, but he said it did. That numskull..

Now i need to find something to amuse myself with for another, erm.. hour.

When someone works somewhere, it’s usually not because they like it. They do it because otherwise they’d be living in a cardboard box, or in a van down by the river. So, that being said, it would only make sense that a company’s payroll department would be on the ball when it comes to making sure everyone gets paid what they’re supposed to.

If you’re like me, when you get your paystub in the mail, you quickly make sure that it’s the same as the last one, making sure that it’s not drastically higher or lower. You don’t sit there any calculate every last thing to make sure it adds up, that’s not your job, that shouldn’t even be a thought.

Well, maybe you should. A coworker has been getting paid COLA (Cost of Living Allowance), which is basically something to help someone pay for insurance, etc if they don’t go through the company to get it. He just recently (in the last year) got married and even more recently had a child. He changed his insurance options (because he previously didn’t have any) to cover himself and his new family. After his changes finally went through, which took about a month and a half (absolutely rediculous if you ask me), he noticed they were still paying him the full amount of COLA. He notified his manager who notified their boss (and so on and so on) until it reached someone who looked into it a bit deeper. Turns out that the coworker had been getting paid too much COLA even before he put his changes in!!

HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?!

So, the company was kind enough (sarcasm) to let him pay the money they had paid him back over the next six months. We’re at work today and check our paystubs online. They paid him the full amount of COLA again. WTF. So next check they’ll be taking that back, plus the amount for what he’s got to pay back anyway.

WHY IS NO ONE GETTING FIRED OVER THIS?!

What makes things worse, our medical and dental premiums have gone up. So, he’s now barely making enough to cover just his mortgage on the first paycheck. That doesn’t include any of his other bills. For the next six months he’s going to be scraping by, and why? Because someone couldn’t pay attention to their job. Granted, I make mistakes in my programming, and yes, sometimes they’re pretty bad (causing productivity drops). But I’m always right on it, to get that shit fixed! How can a company be so lax when it comes to someone’s livelyhood?

Needless to say, we’re both hunting for new jobs again. There are a lot of things that get me frustrated, even angry, but incompetance just takes the cake. No one should be in a spot where they’re doing more harm than good, and if management can’t see that, then they need to be replaced as well.

It’s not even my issue and i’m pissed off. My hope that people aren’t as stupid as I think they are has been obliterated.

Yesterday, i got up at a time when, regularly, i should still be sleeping to take my car to the dealership to get some work done on it. It was supposed to be a mix of regular maintenance and some other fixin’s. Well, I get up there around 9am (after an hour drive), talk to the guy, he says it will be a few hours to do the analysis and that he’d give me a call when he knows anything. Sean and I then go to Ryan’s place to visit and kill time. We talk about video games, music, how other people are stupid, and then decide our stomachs are rumbling and head to Denny’s for some well deserved breakfast.

After sitting there, drinking lots of coffee, and discussing what our corporation should do in Eve, we decided to go to the Mall. I hadn’t been to the mall in ages, so it was confirmation to me that the place really wasn’t that great. After going into the stores we thought might have cool stuff, we went over to Kristina’s place to hang out. We play some Mario Cart for the Wii and then decide to get some lunch. MMMM, Arby’s. As we pull into the parking lot my phone rings. It’s Mike from the BMW dealer. The news is grave. He tells me the things that are broken, and then gives me the total. Then after a small pause he informs me that none of that is covered under my extended warranty. 0_o WHA!?! I had gotten the warranty when i bought the car from a Chrysler dealer. I guess they cover things in Chrysler cars, and if your car happens to have extra things that Chrysler’s don’t, they’re not going to cover them.. BAH! So i decide to only get fixed what i absolutely need, which ran me about 450 dollars.

So my moral of the story is, warranties are like insurance, and insurance never covers anything when you need it to. BAH! i say, BAH!

The place of my employment uses Websense to make sure all its’ worker bees stay on track and don’t look at naughty pictures while they are working. Understandable, let me assure you. I’m in no way saying I should be able to look at adult material while at work. What I am saying, is that I should be able to properly research and understand the topics about which I’m trying to learn.

As anyone who programs will tell you, Google is probably the best thing since sliced bread. Many of your issues can be resolved by searching for what you’re trying to accomplish, in most cases someone has probably already done it and written up a nice forum post about how they’ve succeeded where you’re obviously filled with fail. Guess what? Half those sites, which are filled with golden goodness, are blocked by Websense. I know we could probably just have exclusion lists or something set up for those of us with special needs, but we don’t have the rights to do anything like that. We’d have to get approval from 100 different people to get us the stuff we need. I understand that there are spies everywhere trying to steal the secrets of your mothers pancake recipe. (OK, seriously, i do understand.) But come on, let me get to forums. Please? With sugar on top?

So today we had to install the oracle client on a few machines at work. Man, what a pain that was. It took almost an hour to get the thing setup. I don’t understand why it should take that long to install a client that lets you connect to another database type. I’ve used mySQL a lot in the past, and i’ve never had to wait that long to be able to have a program use it to connect. Other gripes i have about Oracle, is that when you go to their website to download a newer version of their client, there are half a dozen choices. I feel that’s way too many. mySQL for example only has a handful of choices, but, with each download link it explains what that particular client is for. With oracle, it’s not like that. It’s just called Client 11.1.1.11 or 10.8.23.4.. I understand it probably has something to do with different server versions, but still, why not have a client that can work with multiple versions of your database server? Are they really that different?

I think i’m done ranting for a bit. Hopefully tonight I’ll get some work done on our next project.

And now on to work-ish related stuff. The RSS Reader that i wrote for e107 has become very popular. It’s a weird feeling knowing that over 200 people in the world are using something you created. Even though up to now i’ve only gotten less than a dozen messages from users, all stating some sort of issue, i’m thinking that for the most part it works great. The issues that i have addressed have been easy fixes and haven’t really taken me a long time to patch up.

Next i want to work on something more related with what the company is trying to do. I think i’ll take up Zach’s recommendation and learn how to write Shaders.

I’ve been watching Zero Punctuation for a while and I’ve always found it amusing and at times insightful. But this week, i’m not too sure. He reviewed Eve Online, a game that i’ve been playing for almost 3 years. Now, what he says is very true, there are some awefully boring things that go on. But as you watch you’ll see that he didn’t do any of the things that make the game so fun!

1) Joining a player owned corp is part of the game, staying in an NPC corp really isn’t all that exciting. You don’t have the same kind of togetherness and common goal to achieve.

2) He may have tried pvp, but with only two weeks there’s no way you’ve learned all that you need to know. Then on top of that, to solo PvP, you really need a lot of experience and skill points (could be optional). He could have had a good time PvPing in a group, if he would have tried.

3) He didn’t find his niche, he just jumped in and tried to play. That’s not going to work with Eve, you have to learn what you’re good at and then attempt to build your character around that. And by “what you’re good at” i mean personally, not your character. If you can’t handle the stress of PvP, then you shouldn’t be a PvPer. If you hate mining, then you shouldn’t be a miner, etc etc.

4) I don’t wear a shoe on my head

I guess what i’m really saying is that though i love to laugh at Zero puncutation’s reviews, i’m starting to wonder if i should take them seriously at all? I mean, i kind of figured he’d always pick out the bad parts of games and then exaggerate on them. But maybe with Eve he didn’t even attempt to find what draws people to the game? And if he did that with Eve, are all his game reviews like that?

Or maybe we are all the nerds who are what nerds are to nerds like nerds are to normal people.
